The world may be crazy about the second generation of the Skyline GT-R, with R34s, R32s and R32s continuing to appreciate and fuel everyone’s JDM dreams.
But not Shibata-san. Little did he know that a sort of forced-purchase of an R31 Skyline in the mid-nineties would lead him to become the world’s biggest R31 Skyline specialist, one year away to celebrating 30 years in business.
In this episode I visit R31 House, Japan’s largest workshop and the company single handily keeping this boxy generation of the Skyline alive, modifying and restoring them as well as developing hundreds of parts to keep these gems on the road. Not only has he stocked up 700 donor cars in the cemetary behind the shop but 4 years ago decided to launch his own tire brand -Shibatire – something that has brought him massive unexpected success.
