April 23, 2025, Novi, Mich. — Scout Motors Inc. returns as the lead sponsor of Anything Scout’s Vintage Scout Racing Program for the “Happiest Race on Earth,” the National Off Road Racing Association (NORRA) Mexican 1000 race taking place April 26 – May 2, 2025. The 1976 Scout® Terra™ truck will be piloted by Sean Barber, owner of Anything Scout, and his son Owen Barber. This will be Barber’s third NORRA Mexican 1000 in partnership with Scout Motors.
The camaraderie of racing in the desert builds a community among racers similar to the strong community of Scout owners and enthusiasts. For more than four decades, dedicated doers, makers, and everyday explorers have kept the hardworking spirit of the Scout brand alive on farms, trails, tracks, and family outings. Scout Motors was formed in 2022 to craft the next era of American-born and American-built Scout vehicles as rugged and capable as the originals.
“Building our new Scout vehicles has always been about respecting the Scout badge, embracing the Scout way of life, and igniting American ingenuity,” said Scott Keogh, President and CEO, Scout Motors. “Sean Barber and the NORRA Mexican 1000 race community show us all what’s possible when you remain grounded in your purpose and honor the past while pushing boundaries and forging the future.”
Sean Barber is a valued member of the Scout community. In 2003, Sean and his wife Heather bought a small International Scout parts company in the Bay area of California called Anything Scout. The mission was simple: provide quality parts at a fair price, do it with good, friendly customer service, and keep amazing Scout vehicles on the road for years to come. Over the years, the mission remained the same, but the innovation of parts and services evolved into what is regarded as one of the leading bespoke builders of International Scout off-road vehicles, New Legend. Since 2016, New Legend has been building investment-grade Scout restorations from the ground up.
“We are proud and excited to carry the Scout flag in the NORRA Mexican 1000 race again this year,” said Sean Barber, Owner of Vintage Scout Racing Program and Anything Scout. “We started desert racing three years ago and have quickly become addicted to the sport. The camaraderie of the racing community is something special. It makes us feel welcomed and appreciated, just like the Scout community.”
Since its inception, the Scout Motors team has engaged with Scout community members in person and online through the forum the company built to ensure the community voice is heard and embraced. Scout Motors’ focus on connection making is a driving factor for its ongoing partnership with Anything Scout’s Vintage Racing Program to compete in the NORRA Mexican 1000.
Now known as “The Happiest Race on Earth,” the NORRA Mexican 1000 started in 1967. In addition to the racing, the Mexican 1000 immerses competitors in the food, drink, culture, and beauty of Baja.
With entries spanning more than 50 years of off-road racing vehicles, the race class structure for the Mexican 1000 is based on the era of racing that the vehicles originally competed in. This structure enables competitors to be matched against similar vehicles that all have the same technology.
Scout off-roaders have been involved with racing in Baja since 1969 when Jimmy Ray Jones first piloted his 1969 Scout 800A V8 in the race. In addition to Jimmy Ray Jones, other prominent off-road racers who piloted Scout-backed vehicles in Baja races were Sherman Balch, Frank Howarth and Jerry Boone. While Scout-backed vehicles stopped racing in 1982, Scout race trucks could still be found racing in the Baja 1000s well into the 1990s. For this year’s race livery, members of Scout Motors’ design team partnered with the Barbers to develop one that immediately evokes memories of Scout vehicles in the 1970s. Working collaboratively with the Barbers to develop the shared vision of Scout and Vintage Scout Racing Program, they drew inspiration from past Scout racing liveries and the spirit of the NORRA Mexican 1000. Weaving in the history of both Scout and NORRA racing, Scout Motors designers and the Barbers started with a period-correct Terra Cotta exterior paint then tweaked the color for a modern interpretation of a classic Scout paint color for the 1976 Race Terra truck. Historic race-inspired graphics were added to the truck, and a matching helmet design was created to complete the 2025 livery.
Scout Motors is proud to support Sean and Owen Barber in the 2025 NORRA Mexican 1000 race which starts in Ensenada, Baja, Mexico, on Saturday, April 26, 2025, and concludes in San Jose del Cabo, Baja, Mexico, on Thursday May 1, 2025. More information about the NORRA Mexican 1000 can be found here.
