Ken Block’s Legacy Lives On: Inside the Powerful ‘People’s Champ’ Exhibit at Petersen

It’s not every day that the automotive world comes together to honor a true legend, but on the evening of February 15, 2025, that’s exactly what happened at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. The private ribbon-cutting ceremony for “People’s Champ: The Impact of Ken Block” was a heartfelt gathering of Ken Block’s family, closest friends, and industry peers. It was a night filled with reverence, nostalgia, and, of course, high-octane enthusiasm for the motorsports icon whose influence continues to shape car culture, action sports, and beyond. Zendo Automotive Media News House was in attendance to reminisce and reflect on the Ken Block moments of history.

The museum exhibit opened to the public on February 16, on the heels of the 1977 Ford F-150 Hoonitruck selling at auction for $990,000 during the 2025 Barrett-Jackson event in Scottsdale, Arizona back in January.

A Solemn Yet Celebratory Occasion

The room was filled with over 100 guests who had gathered to honor Ken’s memory. Among them were his wife Lucy Block, and their children, Lia, Kira, and Mika, all of whom played a role in the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The atmosphere was bittersweet—while Ken’s absence was deeply felt, the evening served as a powerful reminder of the legacy he left behind.

The guests in attendance included cats from the automotive and performance industry, action sports stars and friends from the DC Shoe days, and the original squad that made up the Hoonigan crew were all in the house.

A video presentation was prepared showcasing highlights from Ken’s career, including some of the most breathtaking moments from his Gymkhana series, the viral stunt-driving films that revolutionized digital media content. The compilation was a testament to Block’s unparalleled creativity, fearlessness, and ability to push boundaries in ways no one else had before.

Several speakers took the stage to reflect on Ken’s journey and the lasting impact he made on motorsports and beyond. As one of the guests shared, it was truly a “Ken Block moment.” Terry L. Karges, Executive Director of the Petersen Automotive Museum, shared how the exhibit came to life and what it means to the museum and car enthusiasts alike.

Ford Motor Co. CEO Jim Farley also contributed to the event with a pre-recorded statement, speaking to Ken’s profound influence and the indelible mark he left on Ford Performance. His words resonated deeply, reminding everyone just how far-reaching Ken’s influence was, from the race track to the boardroom.

A Tribute Through Iconic Machines

Walking through the exhibit, one thing becomes immediately clear: Ken Block was more than just a driver—he was a visionary. Nine of his most legendary vehicles are on display, each representing a chapter in his groundbreaking career. Among the highlights:

  • 1965 Ford Mustang RTR “Hoonicorn” – The monster that starred in multiple Gymkhana films, shredding tires and redefining what an all-wheel-drive Mustang could do.
  • 2005 Subaru WRX STI “Gymkhana Practice” – The car that started it all, setting the stage for a decade-plus of mind-bending driving sequences.
  • 1977 Ford F-150 “Hoonitruck” – A build that was as personal as it was powerful, inspired by Ken’s father’s truck and brought to life in Gymkhana TEN.
  • 2022 Audi S1 E-Tron Quattro “Hoonitron” – A cutting-edge electric Gymkhana machine, proving that Ken’s innovation extended into the EV era.
  • Porsche 911 SVRSR “Hoonipigasus” – The pink and black beast built to dominate Pikes Peak.

Each vehicle is presented alongside memorabilia, racing suits, helmets, and key moments from Ken’s career, giving visitors an intimate look into his world. The “Ain’t Care Wall”, featuring broken and damaged vehicle parts, embodies Ken’s fearless spirit—always pushing the limits, never looking back.

Personal Reflections

Lucy Block, Ken’s wife, took to social media after the opening to share her thoughts:

“Last Thursday, we were able to hold a grand opening event for ‘The People’s Champ: The Impact of Ken Block,’ an eight-month exhibit at The Petersen Automotive Museum. The exhibit is incredible. I cannot wait to go back and take it all in again. Having those cars in one place (don’t forget the RaptorTrax outside and the two hidden gems in the vault) alongside the timeline and videos playing allows you to see the impact Ken made on the industry. He made this impact while striving to have a hell of a good time driving cars and constantly creating reality out of his over-the-top ideas, which never ceased to amaze me.”

Her words underscore just how much this exhibit means—not only to the Block family but to the entire automotive community that Ken inspired.

Bryan Moore, an instrumental cinematographer involved with capturing the Gymkhana films shared his thoughts.

“This exhibit is a time capsule…He [Ken Block] unlocked abilities in people they never knew they had and even with him gone, he is still opening doors and giving people a path. That’s what @43institute is about. Opening doors for people who wouldn’t ever really think they get the chance.

More Than Just an Exhibit—A Movement For A Good Cause

Beyond celebrating Ken’s past accomplishments, People’s Champ: The Impact of Ken Block serves a bigger purpose: supporting the 43 Institute (43i), a nonprofit dedicated to helping the next generation of “motivated misfits” in motorsports, action sports, and creative industries. A portion of the exhibit’s proceeds will go toward this initiative, ensuring that Ken’s legacy continues to fuel the ambitions of young athletes, creators, and dreamers.

The exhibit will be open to the public from February 15, 2025, through October 5, 2025, giving visitors ample time to experience the story of Ken Block up close. Tickets can be purchased at Petersen.org/exhibits.

Mark Your Calendar: National Ken Block Day

As if the exhibit weren’t enough, fans of Ken Block have another big occasion to look forward to: National Ken Block Day on April 3, 2025. This celebration at the Petersen Automotive Museum will bring fans, industry icons, and car enthusiasts together to honor Block’s life and contributions. The event will include:
