Initially introduced to meet the needs of classic car enthusiasts and builders, the original 517 quickly gained popularity — but the demand for larger diameters and modern fitments prompted HRE to evolve the line. The result is a two-pronged approach that brings this beloved 5-spoke design to a broader range of vehicles, from vintage air-cooled icons to cutting-edge supercars.
The 517K, formerly known simply as the 517, is optimized for low-offset vehicles and classic applications, especially in 17″ and 18″ diameters. Its hidden-hardware construction allows for a clean look and a deeper lip, making it ideal for cars like the air-cooled 911 or Ferrari F40. Meanwhile, the new 517 offers the same vintage-inspired design, but with exposed hardware and engineered to supports both low- and high-offset vehicles, as well as modern sizing up to 24″. This includes options like HRE’s FMR® and CRBN® barrel technologies for performance and weight reduction.
Both the 517 and 517K are built around a timeless 5-spoke aesthetic and are available in all of HRE’s standard and optional finishes. The expansion of the line means customers can now enjoy the classic look of the 517 with today’s most advanced construction techniques, materials, and customization options. Whether you’re building a show-stopping restomod or upgrading a modern supercar, the 517 platform offers fitment flexibility without compromising heritage or style.
The 517K is aimed squarely at vehicles like the air-cooled Porsche 911 and other cars from that era that accommodate low-offset fitment. In contrast, the 517 is designed for high-performance modern platforms, offering a wider range of fitments to suit contemporary needs. To celebrate the re-launch, HRE is showcasing three standout builds: a 1970 Porsche 911 T restomod fitted with the 517K, a 992 Porsche 911 Turbo S equipped with the 517 in FMR spec, and a 992 GT3 RS outfitted with the 517 CRBN.
As part of the Vintage Series, the 517 continues HRE’s mission of blending retro design cues with cutting-edge engineering. Drawing direct inspiration from the legendary Porsche 917K race car, the 517 embodies motorsport heritage while delivering modern-day performance, precision, and quality that HRE is known for.
